If your business houses a large number of people, you could face a large scale disaster if your emergency evacuation training is not up to date, meticulously planned and regularly practised.
In particular, residential care services need to ensure that their emergency evacuation procedures are robust, and that all staff are trained to carry them out. If you are tasked with housing vulnerable people, including the elderly or those with mobility problems, this is even more important.
Fireshield Services are a training organisation who provide specialist support to many sectors, but most notably, to residential and hospitality businesses.
The business was founded by David Stapley, who previously worked within the fire and rescue service. Upon leaving the service, he wanted to continue to help make safer communities, reducing the impact and consequence of fire and he set up Fireshield Services to provide risk assessments, building audits, emergency planning and training.
David spoke to the team at Ruth Lee and said,
“Businesses who train their staff achieve better fire safety outcomes. Firstly there is a reduced likelihood of fire, due to staff awareness, and in the event of fire the actions of staff minimise injury and the business impact.
Fireshield Services can ensure the best training experience. We have invested in the best training and simulation aids. The most recent addition has been a Ruth Lee training manikin. The manikin was purchased to enhance our evacuation training programmes. Typically, this involves training care staff how to use a range of evacuation aids and evacuation exercises using live casualties in conjunction with the manikin.
Using the manikin minimises the risk of injury compared to if a live casualty were to be used and we chose Ruth Lee as I had knowledge of the product having used the manikins throughout my fire service career. Ruth Lee staff took the time to identify our requirements advising on the best products that were fit for purpose and provided delegates with a quality learning experience.”
The video below shows delegates from one of Fireshield Service’s Train the Trainer courses, on the use of an evacuation sledge. David went on to say;
“The manikin is realistic in terms of size and weight enabling us to teach the skills of placing a person into the equipment and phases of movement from bed to floor, plus horizontal and vertical movement down stairs.”
