Specialist services require specialist training and at Ruth Lee Ltd we are pleased to supply manikins to organisations that provide expert advice and support to others.
One such organisation is Total Train Ltd, which began operating full-time back in 2013. Part expert witness services and part specialist training provider, Total Train Ltd focuses upon the safer handling of vulnerable people in either police, prison, mental health, education, care, or security industries. All the time aiming to prevent the risk of injury or death to service users.
The training provided by the team aims to prevent the necessity for their expert witness services being required.
The lead trainer is Joanne Caffrey, an ex-police officer who specialises in the prevention of death or injury in custody through self-harm, suicide, restraint or underlying medical conditions, assisted by Angela Brown, an Occupational Therapist, who is engaged in expert witness cases for children and young people.
Together, Joanne and Angela provide training and consultancy to schools, mental health services and the secure sector especially focused upon the management of challenging behaviour and use of force. Angela’s expertise in anatomy, coupled with Joanne’s expertise in the use of force are combined to provide person-centred approaches to behaviour management and care and risk planning.
Topics covered in training include:
- Physical intervention and restraint
- Use of physical restraint equipment e.g., handcuffs
- Suicide and self-harm prevention
- Management of Ligature risks
- De-escalation and conflict management
- Manual handling for complex needs – physical and mobility equipment
- Safeguarding
- Lifesaving skills and first aid for first aiders
- Auto injector use
- Defibrillator use
- The safer management and administration of medication
- Management of choking prevention e.g., swallowed drugs in the secure sector or food within the education and care sectors and use of the de choking devices which are now arriving in the UK.
Lead Trainer, Joanne Caffrey said,
“We use manikins in many different contexts, including ligature hanging and cut down, initial lifesaving rescue such as using a defibrillator, safe airway positions, using the auto-injector for anaphylaxis management, Manual handling including use of hoists, personal care and choking management.
For us, there are many occasions when using a manikin is vital, obviously for ligature cut down, but also for enhanced safety to trainers and participants in things like hoist practice. They are also especially useful when Angela teaches in schools as she will use the smaller manikin with staff to practise – a real child is not a viable option for multiple staff practice.
I would recommend Ruth Lee Ltd to others who are looking to include manikins in their training. They are value for money and offer a robust choice – we have had two of our manikins since 2013! Using a manikin also allows delegates to be repetitive when they are learning without the fear of injuring others, and of course, during covid, offered a practical solution to remove one person from the equation for safer social distancing too!”
